Lunacy Asylums
Before 1808 Asylums were run by private individuals or organisations but in 1808 an act of parliament created County Asylums. Few of these appear to have been built and patients were simply cared for through the Poor Law system, perhaps in workhouses. In 1845 The Lunacy Act and County Asylum Act required Counties to build them.
