Discarded Surnames

Surnames not included in the study

It is hard to draw lines that leave some surnames out and others in, for a one name study such as this, but as some have to be left out, decisions have to be made!

The ones currently not considered as ‘near enough’ are:-

  • CULPITT. An example of this is John and Martha CULPITT of Melton, Suffolk. Although entries in Ancestry show them down as Culpin in their index, an examination of the original entry and for them in earlier census returns shows that the surname is spelt CULPITT. We have considered this as too far away from the root name to be included.
